Maga Engineering emerged the category winner under Best Managed Project in Construction/Infrastructure Development Sector for the construction of 47-storey Clearpoint Residencies at the recently concluded National Project Management Excellence Awards 2018.

This prestigious award ceremony, organized by the Project Management Institute Sri Lanka Chapter was held for the 2nd time in Sri Lanka to recognize complex projects that best deliver superior performance of project management practices, superior organizational results and positive impacts on the society. At the same time, the award scheme recognizes project outcome, technologies, innovative functions and Sri Lankan content in the project prioritizing the value delivered by the project to its clients.

Known as the ‘tallest vertical garden in the world’, Clearpoint Residences is a joint venture between Milroy Perera Associates and Maga Engineering. A brainchild of renowned architect Mr Milroy Perera, the residential apartment tower is a holistic green building which accommodates 171 apartments across 47 floors. One of its many highlights are the planted terraces encircling the building. The plants are maintained through a specially designed automated drip irrigation system that uses recycled water. Furthermore, several self-sustainable features such as solar panels, rain water harvesting, water recycling and solid waste management have been incorporated.

The planted terraces offer the building a unique character while providing many benefits: Formation of a green cover provides a natural cooling system for the entire building, resulting not only in a fresher, more relaxing atmosphere, but also less energy consumption on air-conditioning. This blanket of trees endows the building with an innate soundproofing system. It also provides shade and buffer radiant heat. Clearpoint is also the first high-rise building in Sri Lanka to contain fully-fledged rainwater harvesting, automated drip irrigation, grey water recycling and solid waste disposal systems, as well as solar panels that can power all its common areas.

Commenting on the award, Director Engineering of Maga Engineering and Project Director Mr. Asoka de Silva said, “An exciting project from inception, Clearpoint offered us many unique design and construction challenges along the way. Some of these included the construction of cantilevered terraces on every floor, cantilevered private swimming pools on select floors, planting of endemic trees on terraces and the construction of a curved solar panel assembly on the rooftop. Our clear vision at the commencement of project and commitment from the project execution team, made this vision a reality and enabled us to complete the project on schedule and within budget. Designed  and built by an entirely Sri Lankan group of professionals, the project is a testimony to the engineering and construction expertise held within the local construction industry.’’

Assistant General Manager and Project Manager Mr. Saman Mahawatta noted that “Considering the nature and scale of this unique project, meticulous planning of all salient aspects of project management, covering quality, cost, time, safety and environment was carried out. This enabled us to anticipate the complex construction and operational challenges in advance, eventually resulting in the project’s timely completion and handover. Another the key challenge was to train, retain and manage the large workforce nearing 1000 to ensure smooth operations of work throughout the project. I convey my gratitude to the dedicated project team for the successful completion of this landmark building.’’

This award also endorses Maga’s investments in leading the cause of promoting green buildings in Sri Lanka as the leader in the construction sector of the country. The company remains focused on service and product excellence and is committed to its vision of creating lasting socio-economic value for all stakeholders.  Being a multidisciplinary construction company, Maga continues to offer a diversified range of construction services across industrial, government, real estate and commercial sectors in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s leading construction firm Maga Engineering received recognition for its pioneering efforts in the field of environmental integration at the Best Corporate Citizens Sustainability Awards (BCCSA) 2017 organized by The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. The company was also adjudged one of the Ten Best Corporate Citizens in Sri Lanka.

The company emerged as the category award winner for Environmental Integration in recognition of its best-in-class performance in integrating environmental concerns into core business practices, including the promotion of sustainable buildings and reduction of its environmental footprint through resource efficiency and use of renewable resources. Of particular note was the successful completion of two landmark Green Building projects during the year, that have not only set local standards but global benchmarks — Clearpoint Residencies in Rajagiriya, the tallest vertical garden in the world and the NSBM Green University Town in Homagama, which is the first green University in the South Asian region.

Clearpoint Residencies in a 47-storey green building with cantilevered terraces on each floor that contain a variety of hand-picked, nursery-nurtured plants. These planted terraces offer the building a unique character while providing many benefits: Formation of a green cover provides a natural cooling system for the entire building, resulting not only in a fresher, more relaxing atmosphere, but less energy spent on air-conditioning. This blanket of trees endows the building with an innate soundproofing system. It also provides shade and buffer radiant heat. Oxygen Produced during the daytime provides cleaner air, while leaves act as a natural filter for dust. Clearpoint is also the first high-rise building in Sri Lanka to contain fully-fledged rainwater harvesting, automated drip irrigation, grey water recycling and solid waste disposal systems, as well as solar panels that can power all its common areas.

NSBM Green University town is a BCA Greenmark rated green building that will eventually house 30,000 students and offer state-of-the-art educational facility that has incorporated many energy-efficient principles. Established under the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training, the building was ceremoniously opened in October 2016. In addition to the above, Maga has also helped found the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka, whose pioneering efforts in developing and implementing the Green SL Rating System has enabled many Sri Lankan companies to embrace principles of green building design and construction.

Commenting on the awards, the Chairman & Managing Director of Maga Engineering Mr. M. G. Kularatne noted: “The construction sector inherently has a larger ecological footprint than most sectors. Therefore, we hold a deep responsibility towards doing our best to minimize this adverse footprint, and go one step beyond by creating a positive impact through the built environment. With Clearpoint Residencies in particular, we, together with Milroy Perera Associates, took the bold step of fully integrating sustainability principles into a large-scale commercial venture. The unique project presented us many technical and operational challenges, but we had clear design intent from the start and an amazing construction team. We are proud to note that it was designed and constructed by an entirely Sri Lankan team of architects, engineers and construction professionals. I believe through this project we were able to prove that commercial considerations and ethos of sustainable development can indeed coexist. Therefore, we hope this project will act as a catalyst for the real estate sector and help give new direction to the nation’s upcoming infrastructure.”

The above awards also endorse Maga’s investments in developing its supply chains and communities across the country over the last few years. The company remains focused on service and product excellence and is committed to its vision of creating lasting socio-economic value for all stakeholders. Being a multidisciplinary construction company, Maga offers a diversified range of construction and allied services across industrial, government, real estate and commercial sectors in Sri Lanka.

Maga Signs MOU with Vocational Training Authority on Skills Training

Since the ending of the civil war in year 2009, the increase in local and foreign investments in infrastructure development projects has created an increase in the demand for skilled workers in the construction industry. There have been various initiatives to develop this skilled workforce by the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training.

Vocational Training Authority (VTA) which functions under the above Ministry was established in 1995. The key intention of establishing the Vocational Training Authority was to reach the rural masses of the country (which comprise 72% of the total population of Sri Lanka) and bestow them with necessary skills that will enable their gainful employment both locally and internationally.

Since its inception, VTA has conducted many initiatives to attract unemployed village youth towards the vocations of the construction industry, but has experienced certain reluctance by young men to venture into vocations like masonry, carpentry and bar-bending trades, due to the traditionally negative perceptions and lack of societal recognition. Recent training programs conducted by VTA in joint collaborations with the recognized private companies have yielded better attraction of village youth towards such programs.

Maga Engineering (Pvt) Ltd., since its inception in 1984, has been an active participant in the construction industry in Sri Lanka. Over the course of the last 30 years, they have risen to be become a model construction company in the country, by continually re-investing in knowledge, skills and capital. This has helped them evolve from working under international contractors to presently executing some of the most prestigious building and infrastructure development projects in Sri Lanka.

In order to meet the current and emerging demand for the skilled workers, VTA has recognized Maga as a potential partner in the development of training programs for the above trade categories and use their brand image and the offered job placements to attract unemployed village youth for the proposed training programs.

After several discussions pertaining to practical implementation, both institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 08 November 2016 at the “Nipunatha Niwasa”. The MoU was signed by Major General Gamini Hettiarachchi, The Chairman & CEO of Vocational Training Authority and  Mr. M.G. Kularatne, Chairman & Managing Director of Maga Engineering (Pvt) Ltd.

A total of 240 Mason Technicians and 160 Carpenter Technicians are scheduled to be trained in four training programs within the span of two years at VTA Training Centres. The institutional training will be three months and on the job training will be another three months. The trainees will be paid an attractive training allowance jointly by the both institutions. VTA and Maga will conduct branded promotions to attract the target audience before commencement of each program in mass media and in the regions where the selected VTA centres are located. Successful participants of the training programs will be tested for National Vocation Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 certification and VTA will arrange to award the NVQ certificates through TVEC (Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission). Maga Engineering will offer employment opportunities to the successful participants of the training programs in their project sites.
