Maga Engineering excels at the National Awards for Construction Excellence 2017

Sri Lanka’s leading construction company Maga Engineering (Private) Limited emerged as the winner of 2 National Award for Construction Excellence and National Award for Construction Performance at the prestigious National Awards for Construction 2017.Organized by the Construction Industry Development Authority (CIDA) together with the Ministry of Housing and Construction, the award ceremony was held at BMICH on 26th February. The event was graced by His Excellency the President Mr. Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest.

Maga Engineering was awarded two National Awards for Construction Excellence under the Category 1 of projects exceeding LKR 750 million, recognizing its engineering excellence in the construction of Green University for National School of Business Management (NSBM) in Pitipana, Homagama and the Extension to the Treasury Building in Colombo 01.

A landmark project by The National School of Business Management (NSBM), one of the nation’s premier degree schools, this Green University Town was constructed at a total cost of LKR 10 billion. Opened in October 2016, the University will eventually accommodate 30,000 local and international undergraduates.

The scope of the project included constructing several buildings pertaining to Faculty of Business Management, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Information Technology, Administration building, Library, Student Centre, Auditorium, Student Hostel Staff Accommodations, Recreational Building with swimming pool and Gymnasium and other related services such as Water treatment Plant, Playground and road network spanning over 26 acres of land.

Employed by the Ministry of Finance & Planning, Maga Engineering successfully completed a six storied building as an extension to the treasury building in June 2016. This new building included office areas, a vehicle parking area in its basement, an auditorium together with a roof terrace. The building was constructed while retaining the architectural features of the existing building and careful measures were taken during construction to protect the existing building. The total floor area of the building is 50,000 square feet and it was constructed at the cost of LKR 1.4 billion.

Maga was bestowed one National Award for Construction Performance (Category 1 – value exceeding LKR 1000 million) for the Rehabilitation / Improvement of AB019 Jaffna-Pannai-Kayts Road (Section 1) including its performance based maintenance for five yearsThe project comprised the rehabilitation and improvement of Jaffna-Pannai-Kayts Road of a total length of 10 km, including nearly 4.5 km long causeway section through the lagoon. The main objective of the project was to widen the existing narrow road, one lane with average carriageway width of 3.5m, to two lanes with total carriageway width of 9.6m.

Commenting on the awards, the Chairman & Managing Director of Maga Engineering Mr M.G. Maga Engineering to train 375 Construction Craftsmen in partnership with Ministry of Skills Development

Sri Lanka’s leading construction company, Maga Engineering entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training to provide training to 375 construction craftsmen under the Ministry’s Employment Linked Training Programme (ELTP) yesterday.

The training programme is funded by the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

The programme will be specially tailored to address the needs of the construction industry and fulfill the skill and knowledge gaps of construction craftsmen. It will be a practical-oriented programme which aims to give the selected applicants theoretical knowledge on their particular craft coupled with practical on-the-job training sessions.

The participants for the program will be screened based on their aptitude and their competencies will then be developed in a holistic manner.

Under this programme, 50 Reinforcement Craftsmen, 20 Plumbers, 10 Road Construction Site Equipment Operators, 20 Road Construction Craftsmen, 20 Scaffolders, 20 Tilers, 10 Welders, 110 Masonry Craftsmen, 20 Painters, 10 Occupational Health and Safety Officers, 75 Wood Craftsmen, 20 Painters and 10 Laboratory Assistants will be trained at Maga’s constructions projects under the guidance of experienced and qualified resource personnel.

Upon successful completion of the programme, the participants will be awarded with National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 certification, accredited by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission of Sri Lanka.

Commenting on the programme, Chairman & Managing Director of Maga Engineering, Mr. M G Kularatne said: “We are thankful to the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training for this great initiative. In the fast evolving construction industry, there is a grave need for skilled craftsmen and Maga is proud to play a lead role in attracting and developing more youth through public-private partnerships such as this, which is the way forward.”

The training programme aims to serve social objectives by channeling the potential and strength of youth in Sri Lanka to produce a construction workforce capable of delivering world class results. Upon successful completion, the participants will have the opportunity to find employment within the company and will be able to independently handle site work and supervisory operations.

The training program will be launched this month and will be completed within one year.

Maga joins with Ministry of Skills Development to train construction craftsmen

Maga Engineering (Pvt) Ltd recently signed an agreement with the Ministry of Skills Development to provide training to 185 skilled construction craftsmen under the Ministry’s Employment Linked Training Programme (ELTP). The training programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training and is funded by World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

During the six month programme, 65 Bar Benders, 75 Masonry Craftsmen and 45 Carpentry Craftsmen will be trained. The participants will be screened based on their aptitude and provided with theoretical lectures as well as practical on-the-job training sessions over a period of six months. The training programme will be conducted at Maga’s constructions projects such as Fairway Elements, Fairway Galle, Heritage Hotel Galle, New Maga Head Office Building and Yathama Building under experienced and qualified construction industry experts. Upon successful completion of the training, the participants will obtain a recognized National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 certification accredited by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission of Sri Lanka.

Commenting on the programme, Chairman & Managing Director of Maga Engineering, M. G. Kularatne said “We are thankful to the Ministry of Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training for this great initiative at a time when the industry is facing a shortage of skilled craftsmen. The training programme is scheduled to be held at five of our major construction sites and experienced employees are allocated to mentor the trainees. The

participants will be trained on both theoretical and practical skills in order to equip them with the skills required to gain employment. After the completion of training, the participants will have access to decent employment opportunities whilst gaining greater social acceptance. We also take this opportunity to thank the project financiers the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.”

The training programmed will be launched in mid-November 2016 and will be completed within one year.
