Maga in Brief
Since its establishment in 1984, Maga has been an active participant in the construction industry in Sri Lanka. Over the course of the past 29 years, the organisation has defined itself by continually reinvesting its knowledge and capital. This has helped them evolve from working alongside several international contractors to currently executing some of the most prestigious building and infrastructure development projects in Sri Lanka. Receptive to the emerging national needs, the company is committed to the reconstruction and rehabilitation projects currently underway across the country.
In 2009, Maga received the Gold rating in the first ever Corporate Accountability Rating carried out by Sting Consultants, in recognition of its sustainable construction practices as well as social, environmental and financial accountability. The company is rated Platinum and currently holds the number 3 rank in the country’s Corporate Accountability ranking. The company also attained the coveted Business Superbrand status in 2008, becoming the first construction company in Sri Lanka to do so. The Company has being the winner of the Construction Sector at the National Business Excellence Awards for the last six consecutive years, and the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka’s (IESL) Engineering Excellence Award in 2008, 2012 & 2013. Maga has won a record of 57 National Construction awards within a span of 20 years.
The company continued to play a leading role in the infrastructure development in Sri Lanka in 2012/13, executing work on 12 building projects with a total floor area of over 2,900,000 sqft, five water supply schemes serving over 310,000 residents and road networks spanning over 643 km, several bridges and a flyover. “During 2012/13, the company has completed several landmark infrastructure projects such as the A-9 road, Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Kalladi Bridge, A-35 road, Northern Road Connectivity Project, Point Pedro Water Supply Project, Greater Kandy Water Supply Project, Hambantota Port Administrative Complex & ‘Sethsiripaya Stage II’. In doing so, the company has also created employment and supported the livelihood of over 2,100 persons from the local communities of former war-torn areas,” commented M. G. Kularatne, Chairman of Maga Engineering.
The company’s substantial growth in the water supply sector, was evidenced by Maga being recognized as the Best Contractor in the Water Supply Sector by the NWS&DB, on the way to becoming a key stakeholder in the national goal of providing safe, pipe-borne drinking water to the entire population by 2025. Maga also heightened its focus on large-scale community development projects, including a LKR 100 Million contribution to the “Api Wenuwen Api” housing project of the Ministry of Defence for the differently-abled war heroes.
Maga won Sri Lanka’s first National Green Award for the Private and Public Sector at the inaugural National Green Awards organized by the Central Environmental Authority. Our environmental initiatives have been characterized by Environmental Management Action Plans spanning across a road network of over 600km, building the world’s first purpose-built LEED ‘Platinum’ certified apparel factory, being the first Sri Lankan construction company to report its Environmental Performance under the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), helping found the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka and being the first Sri Lankan construction company to be accredited under both OHSAS 18001 & ISO14001 international standards.
Maga possesses the most experienced group of construction project managers of the country, consisting of over 50 senior project managers and over 240 graduate engineers in the fields of civil, mechanical, electrical, materials, mining and earth resources engineering together with designers, planners, quantity surveyors and technicians and over 7000 craftspersons. A new approach to employee management was also implemented through a Performance Management System in an effort to better manage, engage and develop the company’s talent with a view to enhancing productivity and improving quality. In 2012, our Training Academy trained over 1,200 craftspersons.
In 2013, the company carried out landmark environmental educational programmes in the Eastern province in collaboration with the Central Environmental Authority. Its pioneering focus on sustainable buildings has manifested through two landmark high-rise building projects viz the 32-storey Fairway SkyGardens and the 45-storey Clear Point Residencies, which will become the tallest green building in the world. Maga Engineering has the distinction of being the only Platinum rated construction company in the Corporate Accountability Index of Sri Lanka.
